Application of Laser ablation ICP-MS and EPMA-WDS mapping studying elemental distribution and correlation in polychrome ancient glass

Investigation on Medieval Glass from Poggio Diana Castle (Ribera, Agrigento, Sicily) by LA-ICP-MS and UV-VIS Reflectance Spectroscopy

The samples come from the excavation of a dump found in the Castle of Poggio Diana, built from the end of the 14th century along the final course of the Verdura river. The elemental analysis data show that the glass samples were produced using sodic vegetable ashes as fluxing agents, except for one potassic glass. In order to recognize the silica sources, considering the contents of alumina and other oxides, different groups have been identified. The contents of major and minor elements of these glasses were compared to that of samples of the same period excavated in the nearby archaeological site of Castello Nuovo (Sciacca, Sicily), in order to put a first basis to get a clearer insight into the production of glass and the evolution of the use of raw materials in the Southwestern Sicily.

3D laser ablation-ICP-mass spectrometry mapping for the study of surface layer phenomena – a case study for weathered glass

The procedure is based on laser drilling on a virtual grid on the surface, followed by extraction of depth maps along the z-axis (for each element monitored). Using a burst of 50 laser pulses at 1 Hz on each point of the grid, a penetration rate of ca. 150 nm per pulse (in glass) was obtained and a lateral resolution in the order of the laser beam diameter. By ultrafast ICP-MS monitoring of individual ablation pulses (58 ms for a set of 19 elements) using a laser ablation cell with fast signal washout (less than 0.5 s for whole laser pulse), the corresponding peak areas could be consistently integrated, resulting in spatial elemental data associated with individual pulses. The usual laser drilling limitations such as pulse mixing and signal tailing are avoided with this approach. After manipulation of the spatial elemental datasets and quantification, stacks of 50 2D depth maps (for each element monitored) were produced which could be visualized as volume images or time-lapse movies. As a proof of concept, this approach was successfully used to investigate the degradation mechanisms of a medieval, weathered glass artifact by colocalization analysis of selected cross-sectional 2D elemental images in arbitrary planes of the volume images. It was shown that degradation must have started as a result of dealkalinization leading to depletion of alkalis/earth alkalis in glass surface layers and enrichment of network formers (Si and Al), and subsequent worsening by cracking and formation of corrosion pits and so-called spatiotemporal Liesegang rings indicative of radial leaching.

This study aimed to test the effectiveness and compatibility of some new environmentally-friendly materials for stone consolidation, as the use thereof has been so far poorly investigated. The treatments were based on combinations of an aqueous solution of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and two calcium-based nanomaterials, namely a commercial nanosuspension of Ca(OH)2 and a novel nanosuspension of calcite. The treatments were applied to samples of two porous stones: a limestone and a sandstone. The effectiveness of the treatments was assessed using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultrasound pulse velocity test, colour measurements, and capillary water absorption test. The results suggest that the combined...

The samples, coming from Etruscan sites near Adria (Northern Italy), belong to the so-called Mediterranean Groups I, II and III and are dated from the 5th, 3rd and 2nd century B.C., respectively. To date, analytical data for only two sets of vessels of the Iron Age have been discussed in the literature. In spite of the low number of available samples, this is the first time that vessels of all three periods are analytically compared. Elemental concentration data show that the samples can be classified as low-magnesia-low potash (LMLK) soda-lime-silica glasses, with low phosphorus and titanium contents, in agreement with data for similar samples of the same age. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of the contents of many elements characterizing the siliceous sands showed three distinct sets corresponding to the three periods. Since the sets indicate different provenances of the sands it seems rational to assume that different glassmaking locations were involved. Chromophores and opacifiers of the blue bodies and the yellow, white and turquoise decorations of the vessels were analytically identified, while the nature of the corresponding ores was hypothesized.

It is also reported a universal chart to be used in evaluating for matching network parameters.
